My quick thoughts on this presidental election season...

At the beginning of this election season, I started out supporting former Senator and U.S. Marine, (all around badass), Jim Web (D-VA) for President.  When he dropped out, I supported Rand Paul (R-KY).  After Senator Paul dropped out, I supported, and voted for in the Tennessee GOP Primary, Gov. John Kasich (R-OH).  In the general election, I was one of the more than 4 million Americans who voted for Gov. Gary Johnson (L-NM). 

With all of that being said, my wife and I just returned from attending Donald Trump's inauguration.  He's MY President.  He's OUR President.

I will support him when I agree with him.  I will respectfully oppose him when I don't, while offering alternatives (as opposed to yelling political sound bites loudly or damaging people's property), and like a good Episcopalian, I will pray for him...seriously, it's part of every Sunday Rite, regardless of who is in office.

Rand Paul Wins RLC Straw Poll  

NASHUA, NH - Rand Paul was the most preferred presidential candidate of the Republican contenders as voted by nearly 800 activists attending the Republican Liberty Caucus National Convention, held in New Hampshire, home of the first in the nation presidential primary.

The straw poll was conducted using an alternative voting method called “approval voting,” which allows voters to approve of one or more of the current Republican presidential candidates. This method of voting allows voters to indicate the candidate or candidates that they would support if the election were held today. As a preference poll this may produce results where more than one candidate receives over 50% approval.

Rand Paul was the preference of 57.1% of the convention’s attendees. Ted Cruz came in second with a 51.2% preferred rating. No other candidate received more than 17.9%.

While this does not represent the RLC’s final endorsement, it does indicate a strong preference of the attendees for these candidates. The RLC’s official endorsement process requires two-thirds of its state chapters to approve a candidate. The RLC officially endorsed Ron Paul for President in 2012.

“The large turnout for this event and the enthusiastic participation of attendees in this poll shows the rising tide of Liberty in the Republican Party,” said Matt Nye, National Chairman of the Republican Liberty Caucus. “Liberty Republicans have clearly identified these two candidates as the best in a crowded field. They are an inspiration to Republicans around the country and we look forward to a great crop of candidates at every level, ready to go to Washington and restore limited government and a respect for individual liberty.”

National frontrunner Donald Trump received 6.9% approval in the poll. Ben Carson received 17.9% and Carly Fiorina received 10.1%.

“New Hampshire is the jumping off point for the nomination campaign and with this choice the people have clearly chosen liberty,” said Aaron Day, Chairman of the Republican Liberty Caucus of New Hampshire. “We look forward to seeing a lot more of both Rand Paul and Ted Cruz in the next few months and I’m confident that our state candidates will do well with one of them at the top of the ticket.”

Andrew Jennings of the Center for Election Science, a non-profit group which conducted the poll, observed that “Approval voting is a better way to run elections because it doesn’t force voters to abandon their ideal candidate to vote for a compromise—they can vote for both. In a general election it would prevent spoilers and let all candidates see their true level of support. In crowded elections like the current Republican primary, it would stop the vote splitting which is distorting the race and would allow us to see how the voters really feel about each candidate.”

Unlike a “first past the post” traditional straw poll where participants vote for only ONE candidate, using an alternative “approval voting” system we allowed activists to more clearly express the preference and favorites for the Republican nomination.

Both the Paul and Cruz camps actively encouraged local supporters to participate in the straw poll. This gave them an opportunity to both test and show their organizational strength and level of committed activist willing to come out and vote.

OCA and Our Allies Pressure 10 Senators Who Voted Against States' Rights to Label GMOs

Seventy-one senators voted against the Sanders Amendment to the Farm Bill, an amendment to uphold states’ rights to label genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in our food.

It’s time to take action. The Organic Consumers Association has selected 10 of the 71 senators (listed below). With help from several of our ongoing allies in the GMO labeling battle, along with MoveOn.org, and some of the state GMO campaigns, we’re launching a campaign to start pressuring these 10 senators to support their state’s right to enact a GMO labeling law.

How? By organizing meetings at their Washington D.C. and home district offices. By submitting op-eds to their state newspapers. By encouraging consumers to email and call their senators, write letters to the editors of their newspapers, and post on their facebook pages.

Here’s what we want these 10 Senators to do.

•    Explain why they voted against the Sanders Amendment
•    Issue a public statement that they will not support any rider, amendment, or legislation of any kind that would preempt their state’s right to enact a GMO labeling law.

We’ve listed the 10 Senators below, organized by state. If your Senator is on the list, be on the lookout soon for an invitation to visit one of his or her district offices. In the meantime, you can start pressuring them now, by calling their offices or emailing them. Or posting on their facebook pages (we’ve included the links, next to their names). You can also write a letter to the editor of your local paper, “outing” you Senator as one of those who voted against your right to know.

We’re sending people to Sen. Durbin’s office because he’s the Senate Assistant Majority Leader, and because the people of Illinois have been clear: They want labels on genetically engineered (GE) foods. Illinois has an active “Illinois Right to Know GMO” campaign and the state has GMO labeling legislation in the pipeline. The Illinois Right to Know movement turned out more than 2000 activists on May 25 for the March Against Monsanto. With all that activity, wouldn’t you think the senator who supposedly represents Illinois voters would support an amendment to uphold states’ rights to label GMOs? Apparently not.

GMO legislation:  On Feb. 13, 2013, State Senator Dave Koehler (D-Peoria) introduced SB 1666, legislation that would require companies to label foods containing GMOs. Sen. Koehler has chosen to hold off on a Committee vote in order to hold a series of hearings before the subcommittee of the Illinois State Senate Committee on Agriculture and Conservation. The hearings will be open to the public.

We couldn’t resist including Sen. Rand Paul on the list, even though there is no GMO legislation currently before the Kentucky state legislature. The king of state’s rights, himself, voting against state’s rights to label GMOs? Sen. Paul says he’s “fully in favor of consumers being fully informed of what they're buying, but he's incredibly cautious about handing government new powers to regulate food labeling.” We think it’s worth having an in-depth discussion with Sen. Paul on this issue, especially as there are already so many state laws already governing food and food labeling. Would he vote to overturn those laws, if given the chance?

Kentucky GMO legislation: None.

MAINE: Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine)

Sen. Collins made the list for a couple of reasons. First, as a Republican, we were surprised to see her vote against states’ rights. Second, we were especially surprised, given that Maine has such a strong GMO labeling movement. The state is poised to pass GMO labeling legislation soon, thanks to the powerful Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, which is leading the charge. The overwhelming majority of Maine voters want GMO labeling laws. Maine’s Sen. Collins? Not so much.

Maine GMO legislation:  A GMO labeling bill has been passed out of a joint legislative committee and will be voted on by the state Senate and House any day.

MASSACHUSETTS: Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass)

Is Sen. Warren, who is so often on the right side of so many issues, just out of touch with the voters in Massachusetts? We were shocked to learn that she voted against the Sanders Amendment, especially in a state that is currently considering five GMO labeling bills. Sen Warren’s response to a voter who asked her why she voted no on states’ rights to label GMOs? She insisted that the Sanders Amendment would “take away the authority of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).” When the voter pointed out that the amendment merely would have preserved federal protection of states’ rights to safeguard consumers, she “wouldn’t hear of it,” the voter said. We’re hoping her hearing will improve if enough people show up in her office to talk about the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution, and why voters in her state want the right to know what’s in their food.

Massachusetts GMO legislation: The Massachusetts state legislature is currently considering five GMO labeling bills. The Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture is debating H.808, introduced by Todd Smola (R-Palmer), which would require the labeling of foods containing GMOs and H.813, introduced by Ellen Story (D-Amherst), which would require the labeling of genetically engineered seeds. The remaining three GMO labeling bills have been referred to the Joint Committee on Public Health, including H.2093, introduced by Ellen Story (D-Amherst), H.2037, introduced by Michael Moran (D-Brighton), and H.1936, introduced by Stephen DiNatale (D-Fitchburg).

MICHIGAN: Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich)

We chose Sen. Stabenow because, well, she’s such an easy target. She’s not only chair of the Senate Ag Committee, but she actually led the opposition to the Sanders amendment.  The fact that she took in more contributions from agribusiness in 2012 than any other senator, is just icing on the cake. Arguing against the Sanders Amendment, Sen. Stabenow said  that the amendment “ . . . would interfere with the FDA’s science-based process to determine what food labeling is necessary for consumers.” Stabenow’s statement shows either her ignorance of, or dismissal of, the existing scientific evidence that GE food has been linked to everything from allergies to kidney failure to cancer.

Michigan GMO legislation: None. But there’s an active GMO Right to Know movement in the state, and 12 cities mobilized marchers for the March Against Monsanto on May 25.

MINNESOTA: Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.)

Sen. Franken’s vote was another one that had us scratching our heads. In a state with active Right to Know campaigns in major cities, and new ones being formed every day, you’d think Sen. Franken would have voted on the side of the people, not Monsanto. He can’t claim that he doesn’t know how Minnesota voters feel. Two GMO labeling bills have been introduced in Minnesota and, to date, three of Minnesota’s most-read newspapers, the Duluth Tribune, Timberjay (northern MN), and Star Tribune, have all endorsed the state’s labeling legislation.

Minnesota GMO legislation: On February 28, 2013, SF821, a bill to require the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered seed and food was introduced in the Minnesota legislature by Senators John Marty and Foung Hawj. A companion bill, was introduced by numerous members of the House on March 11, 2013. Both bills are being withheld from a Committee vote due to the need to build more support in the legislature through grassroots organizing and outreach.

MISSISSIPPI: Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss)

No big surprise, here. Sen. Cochran, along with Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), is credited with trying to block the Merkley Amendment to the Farm Bill, an amendment introduced by Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) to repeal the infamous Monsanto Protection Act. We don’t hold out much hope of winning over Sen. Cochran. But as the ranking member of the Senate Ag Committee, we think it’s a good idea for Mississippi Right to Knowers to pay him a visit. We’re hoping the folks in Jackson, Miss., who marched against Monsanto will help us march into Sen. Cochran’s office.

Mississippi GMO legislation: None.

NEW JERSEY: Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.)

We have no idea why Sen. Menendez voted against the Sanders Amendment.  New Jersey has an active GMO labeling movement and bills are pending in the legislature. We did notice that more than a year ago, a New Jersey voter left a note on Sen. Menendez’s website asking him to please introduce a GMO labeling bill in New Jersey. It looks as if Mr. Menendez hasn’t responded. Maybe he’ll talk to voters if they organize meetings with him?

New Jersey GMO legislation: This year bills were introduced in the NJ Senate and House, but neither has been passed out of committee.

NEW YORK: Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.)

One look at Sen. Gillibrand’s facebook page and it’s obvious that New York voters weren’t happy with her vote against the Sanders Amendment. There were plenty of questions about the vote on her page. But no answers. Meanwhile, GMO Free New York continues to push for a state GMO labeling law, with or without Gillibrand’s support.

New York GMO legislation: New York has two active GMO labeling bills in the state legislature: Assembly Bill A3525, sponsored by Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, D-Manhattan, and Senate Bill S3835, sponsored by Kenneth Lavalle, R-Albany. A3525 was voted down in the Assembly's Committee on Consumer Affairs and Protection on June 4, 2013. Assemblywoman Rosenthal has vowed to find another way to bring the measure to a vote before the Legislature’s June 20 recess.

WISCONSIN: Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.)

Wisconsin is one of those states where you just expect that leaders will do the right thing. So, again, we were surprised when Sen. Baldwin voted against her constituents’ right to know. Right to know Wisconsin is actively assisting local leaders in support of labeling GMOs while promoting more general awareness of the threats they pose to human health and the environment. We hope to engage Sen. Baldwin in a conversation about states’ rights to label GMOs, and win her over to our side.

Buck stops with Obama in Benghazi security breach

Monday’s foreign policy debate between President Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney was designed to help voters better understand each man’s vision for America’s role abroad. While I have publicly taken issue with both candidates on aspects of their foreign policies, there is no question that Mr. Romney remains the right choice for Americans on Nov. 6.

However, it is also clear neither candidate adequately addressed the gross intelligence failure in Libya that left four Americans dead, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens. Too many important questions remain unanswered concerning Mr. Obama’s entire mishandling of the recent siege of Benghazi.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask the questions Americans want answered.

The first and most pressing question for Mr. Obama remains: Where the hell were the Marines?

Two of the most potentially vulnerable or dangerous American embassies are in Iraq and Libya. In Iraq, we have roughly 17,000 people guarding our ambassador. Not all of them are Marines, but some several hundred are, and they guard our ambassador behind a 10-foot-high walled fortress. In Iraq, we cannot afford to take any unnecessary risks with our diplomats and go to great lengths to ensure that there are plenty of armed personnel between our representatives and any potential threats.

In Libya, there were no uniformed Marines guarding our ambassador. Originally, there was a 16-person security team led by Col. Andrew Wood, who had requested to stay in Libya. In July, Stevens sent memos to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee requesting an “extension of tour of duty (TDY) personnel.” Stevens was referring to Col. Wood’s 16-man team, which was scheduled to leave in August.Stevens requested on Aug. 2 — just six weeks before his murder — to keep security personnel in Libya “through mid-September,” calling the conditions there “unpredictable, volatile and violent.”

Col. Woods has also said that he repeatedly requested to remain in Libya because he felt both the environment and the ambassador were unsafe. Now, after the tragic fact, no one knows what happened to Stevens‘ original request.

Why was the security team that both Stevens and Col. Woods requested sent home? Who made this decision?

What happened to the plane, Mr. President? There was supposed to be a DC-3 available to help people get out of Libya or to travel around the country as needed. But that plane was taken away on May 4. On May 8, just four days later, the State Department spent $108,000 on a new electrical charging station to “green up” our embassy in Vienna.

You have to ask: Was this “green” initiative more important than the security of our embassy in Libya? We spent about $1 million on electric cars to make a political statement in Vienna, but we somehow couldn’t find the time or resources to have just one Marine guarding our Libyan embassy, much less a much-needed 16-man personnel team. We spent $100,000 on an electric car-charging station to show Vienna how green we are, but did not keep a plane in Libya that could have been instrumental in transporting our own diplomats to safety.

The president now says the buck stops with him. Fair enough. So, President Obama, again: Where the hell were the Marines? Where was the plane? Saying the buck stops with you sounds good, but you have to follow through.

We’ve seen this kind of government incompetence before.

Once the initial shock and horror of Sept. 11, 2001, began to subside, the finger pointing commenced. Everyone agreed that our intelligence had failed — massively — but no one would claim responsibility for this failure. Reports of possible terrorist attacks had been repeatedly ignored, including the FBI turning down search warrants from their Minnesota branch that could have potentially provided us valuable information.

Still, after the worst terrorist attack in American history, no one was held accountable.

In 2001, 3,000 innocent people lost their lives — but not one government bureaucrat lost his job.

The siege of our embassy and the murder of our diplomats in Benghazi should never have happened. But these events did happen, and this administration continues to be reluctant to give us answers and provide accountability.

As a member of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, I am calling for hearings and a full investigation into what really happened in Benghazi, how our intelligence failed and how, ultimately, we failed to protect our own people.

What happened in Libya was inexcusable. I’m tired of hearing too many government officials make too many excuses. Those responsible must be held accountable and those at fault should be fired.

The president now says, “The buck stops here.” It’s time for him to prove it, and if he won’t, it is time for Congress to do its job and get to the bottom of it.

Can you believe TN Senators Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander just voted to give your money to America's enemies!?

That's right! 

Believe it or not Tennessee Senators Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander voted last week to continue giving American tax dollars to the governments of Egypt, Pakistan, and Libya (among others). Senator Rand Paul introduced an amendment to stop foreign aid and international welfare to unfriendly governments and forced a vote on the issue. 

This aid of course goes to the Libyan rebels, which are terrorists, therefore it is not a stretch to say that Corker and Alexander just voted to fund terrorism! What's worse is that they are stealing our money through taxation and inflation in order to fund the terrorists.

U.S. jobless claims hit 2-year low.

I am truly happy that our economy is starting to recover and more and more Americans are finding work. As this continues to happen, less and less tax payer money will have to be used for unemployment and social benefit programs. With that being said, federal spending (of our tax dollars) is still out of control. Democrats and Republicans both must work hard to cut spending, reduce our deficit, and balance the budget. Dear Friends,

You and I deserve leaders with principles – and the GUTS to back them up.

But that’s not usually what we get, is it?

We get mealy-mouthed politicians with their fingers in the air, searching for the political winds to know when it’s safe to take a position.

And God forbid we ask them to actually LEAD.

It’s vital you do. I am the ONLY US Senate candidate with a clear shot at victory who is making border security and illegal immigration a top priority.

That’s because one thing is clear: the war to control our borders has failed. Much like any failed war in the past half century, it’s because we’ve picked the wrong battles and haven’t played to win.

That will change with my first day in office. My American Sovereignty Protection Act will include:

-An end to Birthright Citizenship. If you are here illegally, and therefore not subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, your children are not automatic citizens of this country and not eligible for free schooling, healthcare, welfare, and more.

-Secure Borders with a physical or electronic fence. Include satellite surveillance, and helicopter stations all across the border.

-Redeploy any unnecessary foreign military outfits to our border. We have troops in 135 countries, but we cannot seal our own borders. This is a disgrace.

-End of the special privileges of our out of control welfare state for illegal immigrants and demand proof of a person’s legal right to be in the US before granting aid and support from the taxpayer. I could not agree more with the economist Milton Friedman who said “You cannot have open borders and a welfare state.”

I’m saddened to ponder the fact that we have both. But it’s time to end that. It’s time to seal our borders and reign in our out of control government spending.


There are many in Washington – including the Obama Administration and their allies in Congress, who are pushing just the opposite approach.

They want to give AMNESTY to illegal immigrants.

They want to continue to allow people to thumb their noses at our laws, cross over our borders at will, and drain the resources of hard working Americans.

Remember, the idea that “the government” has money is a fallacy – the money that is spent on welfare state benefits for illegal immigrants is YOUR money. It is forcibly taken from each and every taxpayer.

But there’s more to this problem than simply money and doing the right thing by taxpayers.

You see, people in Washington like to pretend their doing all they can to keep you safe from the threat of terrorism.

After all – law abiding citizens routinely get full body searches at airports – so we must be safe, right? Wrong.

An open border is an open invitation to terrorists.

We all know it’s true in theory. But what should really worry all Americans is that it is no longer a theory, it’s provable fact.

Recently, news reports have highlighted the fact that terrorists have been traveling from Europe, to South America, where they learn to speak Spanish and blend in to local customs. Then they go to Mexico and sneak in with Mexican drug smugglers.

The press is not alone in their reports here -- a report in the U.S. Congress showed the exact same thing.

This 2006 report, titled "A Line in the Sand: Confronting the Threat at the Southwest Border" and prepared by the House Committee on Homeland Security Subcommittee on Investigations, indicated that 1.2 million illegal aliens were apprehended in 2005, and 165,000 of those were from countries other than Mexico.

Hundreds were from nations the Border Patrol defines as "designated by the intelligence community as countries that could export individuals that could bring harm to our country in the way of terrorism", including Afghanistan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Sudan and Yemen.

These reports also noted:

-Members of Hezbollah have been verified to have come through our southern border.

-Military clothing belonging to Islamic extremists has been found, emblazoned with patches with phrases like “martyr – way to eternal life.” One even depicted the planes flying into the World Trade Center.

-Currently, only 10-30% of potential illegal immigrants are caught. That means 70-90% make it in under our current system.

Who continues a program that fails this miserably? Our government.

It’s time to get serious. Time to get serious about national defense and terrorism. Time to get serious about our fiscal mess and stop the bleeding of taxpayer dollars on our welfare state.

Time to get serious about preserving our country before it is too late.

The best thing about much of these plans is that they can be done and ready in a very short period.

That’s good, because time is running out.

I believe we can accomplish the goal of securing our border within MONTHS, not years.

And I believe we must.
