Republican Liberty Caucus Announces Wayne Allyn Root as Chairman of National Campaign Committee and Advisory Board

        

The National Board of the Republican Liberty Caucus (RLC) has voted to name Wayne Allyn Root as Chairman of its National Campaign Committee, as well as Chairman of the RLC Advisory Board. Root, now back to his lifelong Republican roots, was the Libertarian Vice Presidential nominee in 2008, as well as an elected Board member of the Libertarian National Committee, and Chairman of the Libertarian National Campaign Committee.

One of America’s most vocal critics of the Obama administration, Root is a frequent radio and TV guest, political commentator, syndicated political columnist, and the author of the national bestselling books, “The Ultimate Obama Survival Guide” and “The Murder of the Middle Class.”

"We are very excited to have Wayne on board," said Matt Nye, RLC National Chairman. "Wayne is an extremely talented, charismatic and dynamic media personality; he's an outspoken advocate for liberty, but he is particularly fierce on economic freedom and the U.S. Constitution."

At the time Root joined the Libertarian Presidential ticket in 2008, the Bob Barr-Wayne Root presidential ticket was the 2nd most successful vote-getter in the party's history. Root says that experience showed him just how heavily the scales are tilted in favor of the two-party system.

"As the Libertarian Party’s vice presidential nominee, I called myself a 'REAGAN libertarian,' in honor of my heroes Ronald Reagan and his mentor Barry Goldwater," Root said. "I will forever be a libertarian leaning Republican-conservative, and I am grateful for my start in national politics with the Libertarian Party."

Root says the grassroots uprising in 2010 and 2014 has given him hope the Republican Party can be returned to its roots.

"Given the popularity of the Tea Party message it makes sense to work within the Republican Party to return the GOP to the ideology of Ronald Reagan, Barry Goldwater and Jack Kemp," Root said. "That is exactly the mission of the Republican Liberty Caucus, and I’m here to inject a dose of world-class energy and enthusiasm!"

RLC Chairman Matt Nye agrees, but says the Republicans apparently didn’t get the memo. He hopes high profile individuals like Root joining with grassroots organizations like the RLC will help them see the light.

"In spite of the clear message the grassroots sent with massive, record-setting landslides in both the 2010 and 2014 elections, GOP party leadership doesn't appear to have gotten the message," Nye said. "Republicans were given a clear mandate to stop Obama's agenda, but they've done nothing of substance to do so."

Root agrees. "We're stuck with leadership in both houses that is either spineless, incompetent or sympathetic to the president's big government agenda; that, or the GOP’s leaders have simply been bought off by lawyers, lobbyists, big corporate donations and the famous DC culture of corruption," Root said. "This is simply unacceptable. We are watching the greatest country, and the greatest middle class, in world history being systematically destroyed, and that is something I cannot stand by idly and watch."

In his best-selling books Root blames the partnership of big government, big media and big corporations.

"Republicans must stand firm, cut spending and debt, balance the budget, repeal Obamacare, audit and reform the Fed, re-establish the Gold Standard and roll back out-of control federal agencies like the EPA, IRS, and the NSA program spying on US citizens," Root said. "Most of all, Republican leaders must stand up and fight for capitalism and American Exceptionalism.”

Root says Republicans must offer a clear alternative.

"The GOP controls Congress, and Congress controls spending," Root said. "It's time the GOP withdraws from this president's agenda that is destroying capitalism, small business and America. If they can’t do that, then Americans have no reason to vote Republican."

Nye concurs.

"With Wayne's help, we at the RLC intend to hold their feet to the fire,” he said.

Use the Constitution to prevent war with Syria

Syria is getting to be an old and boring story, but it still is a deadly come-hither trap in which America may yet be bloodily ensnared by its bipartisan interventionists.

By now the story is familiar. A government in Damascus that is officially recognized by all the Great Powers, the UN, and other major international organizations is attacked by domestic dissidents who are supported and militarily powered by al-Qaeda and other mujahedin, and funded by the Saudi, Emirati, and Qatari regimes. The “International Community,” as usual, sides with any set of miscreants that can utter the word “democracy” and thereby ensures the currently ongoing bloodbath in Syria. President Obama, his party, and the Republicans also side with al-Qaeda and the Islamists against Asaad in a piece of thinking that is perfectly logical when you accept that none of that crowd cares about preserving America’s security and financial viability, or about how many American lives they waste.

Now, we have fresh reports that the Asaad regime has used chemical weapons against areas belonging to the Syrian government’s Islamist enemies and that we have — perhaps? maybe ? probably? certainly? — crossed Obama’s much-vaunted red line for sending the U.S. military to teach Asaad a lesson about how to be a good citizen of the world, or at least to be more kind to Syrian citizens than Obama ever intends to be toward U.S. citizens.

Obama is, of course, consulting with his interventionist brains trust — starting with the towering intellects of Biden, Kerry, Brennan, and Susan Rice — and the president will certainly order those senile Republican champions of all war, all the time, McCain and Graham, to demand a U.S. military assault on Asaad’s government.

Amidst the developing momentum for the U.S. to enter another war that will strengthen al-Qaeda and its allies — like the one Obama fought in Libya and the anti-democratic one in Egypt he authorized this month — perhaps it is worth reviewing three salient and crystal clear facts:

–1st : The United States has no genuine national-security interests in Syria. If all Syrians turn up dead tomorrow morning it would have precisely no impact on security of the United States. Syrians share this characteristic with those living in most areas of the world outside North America, which is the main reason that America would fight very few wars if it ever begins to elect adults to the presidency and the Congress.

–2nd: Unless America is attacked first, no U.S. president has the constitutional authority to take America to war without a formal declaration of war by Congress. Asaad surely is not going to stage an amphibious invasion of America, although a month-long visit from Syria’s Republican Guard could do nothing but good for the now-occupied Political/Hollywood summer-vacation cesspools in the Hamptons and Martha’s Vineyard. Therefore, the Senate and House leaders ought to tell Ol’ Red-Line Barack that there will be dollars and American lives for a Syrian war only if (a) he formally asks for a declaration of war and (b) the Congress believes his justification for a war and votes in favor of taking 330 million Americans into an unnecessary war against the Syrian Superpower.

–3rd : Today’s status quo in Syria benefits U.S. national-security interests without Washington having to take any action at all:

–a.) The Syrian army, Lebanese Hizaballah guerrillas, and Iran’s soldiers are killing large numbers of America’s enemies among al-Qaeda, its allies, and their supporters. Iran and Syria also are spending themselves further into bankruptcy.

–b.) At the same time, Al-Qaeda and its allies — America’s enemies — are killing large numbers of the Syrian army, Lebanese Hizballah guerrillas, and Iran’s soldiers, all of whom Washington describes as America’s true-blue enemies.

–c.) And much of this mayhem is being at least partially facilitated by the money and expensive equipment being sent to each side by other of America’s enemies — Russia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE, for example.

For all of these realistic, common sense, beneficial-to-America, and — dare I say? — America First reasons, as well as for the even more important constitutional reasons cited above, Senate and House leaders ought to lay down the constitutional law — that is, no Congressional declaration, no war — to the supposed constitutional lawyer Obama and thereby make him obey the law for the first time in his presidency.

News Release June 26, 2013   Libertarian Party applauds DOMA strikedown The Libertarian Party applauds the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision today to strike the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a federal law that discriminates against non-heterosexual marriages. The Libertarian Party has supported marriage equality since its founding in 1971. "The Republican Party has never supported marriage equality," said Laura Delhomme, 2013 Libertarian candidate for delegate in Virginia. "Democrats, despite their alleged support of civil liberties, only added a reference to same-sex marriage to their party platform in 2012 — when it became politically convenient." DOMA was pushed through by a GOP-led Congress and signed by a Democratic president. "This is a landmark victory for personal freedom," said Geoffrey J. Neale, chair of the Libertarian National Committee. "The Democrats and Republicans who have advanced, defended, and let stand government intrusion into the private contracts and choices of consenting adults will be remembered for their inhumanity on this issue." Ending DOMA means that the federal government will recognize the legal marriages of same-sex couples in states that recognize marriage equality. This is a good first step toward ending government discrimination that has affected millions of Americans. Libertarian candidates have long rallied for marriage equality. This year, Robert Sarvis, Libertarian Party of Virginia candidate for governor, along with Delhomme and several other candidates for legislature, have vowed to press for recognition of same-sex marriage in Virginia. Libertarian candidates in New Jersey, the only other state that is holding legislative races this year, are also calling for marriage equality. "Same-sex couples are denied the right to marry because the governor vetoed the marriage equality bill that would have guaranteed their civil rights," said Ken Kaplan, Libertarian for governor in New Jersey. "I will sign such a bill." The Libertarian Party platform states that "Sexual orientation, preference, gender, or gender identity should have no impact on the government's treatment of individuals, such as in current marriage, child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws." A recent poll from ABC News/Washington Post shows that 58 percent of Americans support marriage equality, a rapid change from just a decade ago, when only 39 percent supported it. June 2013 This month –as early as tomorrow— the US Supreme Court will tell us whether Black and Brown citizens have the right to vote. Now, if you saw the film Lincoln, you probably thought that issue was settled about 143 years ago. But Honest Abe never imagined a High Court occupied by Dishonest Thomas and Scalia the Scurrilous. There’s been a lot of nonsense talk fogging the issue before the Court. To cut through the BS, the Palast Investigative Fund has made a little film, How Do You Steal a Dream? You could call it 'The Idiot’s Guide to the Voting Rights Act.' The idiots, of course, are on the Bench. We made How Do You Steal a Dream? in coordination with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the organization founded by Martin Luther King. Give me 14 minutes—watch this film--and I’ll give you something you can do to stop the return of Jim Crow. What’s at stake is Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act. Without Section 5, the Voting Rights Act’s teeth fall out, and the Justice Department loses any real ability to stop Jim Crow tactics used to keep voters of color (mostly Democratic Blue) from registering and casting ballots. Section 5 requires that 16 states with histories of Jim Crow voting restrictions “pre-clear” any changes in voting procedure with the Department of Justice. But the right-wing Supremes say that Florida and other states subject to Section 5 no longer play games with voting rights. Really? If you think that African-American voters are no longer vulnerable to registration purges, hours-long lines to vote in Black precincts, ID challenges and other impediments, I have two words for you: Katherine Harris. And if you thought “Purge’n General” Harris was bad news for minority voters, her Jane Crow act was nothing compared to Governor Rick Scott’s current push to purge 180,000 “illegal alien” voters from Florida voter rolls. Those 180,000 American citizens were only allowed to vote in last November's election because Section 5 was still alive. Pop quiz: How many “illegal alien” voters did Governor Rick ultimately bust? The idea that libertarians are just states’ rights supporters who have no problem with rights oppression on the state level is a misconception that needs to be put down.

First of all, you should read this primer on states’ rights before continuing forward. Also, states do not have rights, only people have rights.

Heard all too often from far too many people is that libertarians only want limited government at the federal level, but they’re fine with the state and local governments trouncing all over people’s rights. The sort of people being talked about here can most accurately be described as constitutionalists, but even then these types of people rarely understand the US constitution.

There are two things that need to be understood here, the first being that libertarians want a government at every level that does one thing, that is secure and protect the natural rights of all people equally by providing them a venue of recourse against aggressors. This would be the judicial system. The other thing that needs to be understood is that next to the people, the second best thing to protect our rights is a constitution which limits what governments can do. It is because of this that libertarian types strive to understand and enforce the constitutional roles of each level of government.
Something to keep in mind is that the majority of libertarians are not “pure” by any sense and are more pragmatic while using libertarian principles as a guide. While a person will say that they are opposed to for example Social Security as a federal program because the federal government is not provided this power by the constitution, they may or may not be opposed to it at the state level. A person with deeper libertarian beliefs is going to also oppose such a program at the state level, though they will recognize the legitimacy of the state to implement such a program due to the constitutional roles of government.

Touching on a highly sensitive subject, there is no official libertarian stance on abortion simply because the matter is so intricate that there are a number of views on the matter. What some libertarians will argue though is that the federal government is not granted the authority to regulate abortion and due to this the constitutional role of government dictates that this be a state issue.

However, even as people advocate this be a state issue and not a federal one, they will still advocate for the right to an abortion, though there are others who want to either restrict abortion or eliminate it. These people make up a minority though. Others will argue this does fall under federal jurisdiction. In short, it’s a mixed bag.

Marriage is another issue that seems to confuse people when it comes to libertarians. The grand majority of libertarians believe that government on all levels has absolutely no business being involved with the matter of marriage. This is another area where libertarians can be split on the matter. One group believes it is a federal matter because pragmatically this is the only way to treat all people equally under the law. Others believe that this is not a matter that the federal government has any jurisdiction over except in cases where state laws do not treat people equally. Those who believe states are able to make laws concerning marriage in any way they choose are not libertarians, this is a firm assertion regardless of what anyone claims.

Many libertarians are constitutionalists and indeed understand the constitution far greater than many self-proclaimed constitutionalists. There are those who are not constitutionalists though and are this way because they either do not understand constitutional roles of government or believe the constitution is a faulty document. Of course there are those who do support the constitutional roles of government and still believe the constitution to be a faulty document. It’s very hard to pigeonhole these people on such matters.

In short the grand majority of libertarians believe in limited government at all levels, a government that does not restrict people except to make laws criminalizing force and fraud, and constitutional roles. The government which is closest to the people is going to generally be the most efficient at delivering government services and will also be the easiest to impact as an individual rather than some large entity a thousand miles away. So yes, libertarians support the proper constitutional role of government and states’ jurisdiction while opposing discrimination at every level. This also means that libertarians support the federal government stepping in to ensure that state laws are not used in a discriminatory manner.

Again, I urge you to read this primer on states’ rights in order to get a far better understanding of the subject and the views of those who advocate states’ rights, or what is better termed as states’ jurisdiction.

Dershowitz: US on “Shaky Constitutional Grounds” to Interrogate Boston Suspect Without Miranda

Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz tells Newsmax that federal investigators will be on “shaky constitutional grounds” if they try to interrogate the surviving Boston Marathon bombing suspect without first reading him his Miranda rights, and that there is no “absolutely” no grounds to hold the suspect as an enemy combatant.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, Dershowitz said that, while he personally likes Sens. Lindsey Graham and John McCain, “they absolutely should go back to school and study their constitutional law” if they persist in calling for 19-year-old terror suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to be held as an enemy combatant.

Dershowitz, whose clients have included Mike Tyson, Patty Hearst, and Jim Bakker, said that he does not believe federal investigators have any basis to interrogate Tsarnaev under the so-called public safety exception, which officials have cited as a basis for not immediately Mirandizing the suspect when he was taken into police custody on Friday following a dramatic manhunt that ended in a boat described as a 22-foot Seahawk cruiser with a fiberglass hull parked outside a Watertown, Mass. home.

“He’s probably now unconscious or incommunicative. So I think he doesn’t have to be charged,” explained Dershowitz, who lives close to the shootout that took place with police, but was not home at the time. “I think the shaky constitutional grounds begin to emerge when they start questioning him and they don’t give him his Miranda warnings.”

He said that he does not believe that the public safety exception does not pertain in this case and any statements the suspect makes would probably be ruled inadmissible.

“In this case the two defendants have been apprehended. One is dead. The other is under surveillance. They have access to his home. They have access to all of the explosives,” Dershowitz said. “The police chief has said there’s no continuing danger. What they’re seeking is information — intelligence information — and the public safety exception simply doesn’t apply to that.”

One possibility is that investigators do not believe they need to use Tsarnaev’s statements to get a conviction.

“They have a videotape of him planting the bomb. They have his statements — or his brother’s statements . . . to the person who’s car was hijacked. They have fairly overwhelming forensic evidence of his guilt,” Dershowitz explained. “So they don’t need the statement.”

A Newsmax contributor, Dershowitz’ most notable cases include his role in overturning the conviction of Claus von Bülow in 1984, and as appellate adviser for the defense in the O.J. Simpson murder trial.

If he were preparing the defense, Dershowitz said that he would not try to accentuate the suspect’s youth and mental state in as some legal experts have suggested.

“That’ not going to work when you have a video of him planting a bomb in front of an 8-year-old boy who died. You’re not going to get any sympathy for him at all,” he said. “I think that may be something that they will want to tell the jury in terms of whether he gets the death penalty or not. But even that’s not going to be particularly sympathetic.”

Dershowitz said a better approach for the suspect’s defense would be to challenge federal jurisdiction for the case. He would argue that the alleged offense is a domestic murder case.

“This is not a federal terrorism case because we don’t know his motive. We don’t know whether he was just angry at America. We don’t know whether he was seeking something. We don’t know if this was part of a jihadist campaign,” said Dershowitz. “Unless the government can demonstrate that he had the intention that makes the act a terrorist act under the statute it becomes an ordinary state crime.

“In Massachusetts, murder is not punishable by the death penalty.”

If the case is tried in federal court, Dershowitz said, prosecutors are likely to seek the death penalty.

“I think on balance the government will seek the death penalty in this case and I think they’ll get it,” he said. “Remember, you get a tremendous advantage when you seek the death penalty. You get a jury which excludes anybody who has a moral, conscientious scruple against the death penalty, so you tend to get a conservative jury. And the jury is more likely to convict and more likely to sentence to death.”

While he believes it would be difficult to try Tsarnaev in Boston for obvious reasons, he said that it is likely the suspect could be tried in Springfield, Mass., which is only several hours away.

“I think he would get as fair a trial as possible under the circumstances,” Dershowitz explained. “When you commit horribly heinous offenses you’re only entitled to the fairest trial that your alleged offenses justify.”

He added that “this is the worst possible case for seeking any kind of combatant status” as some lawmakers have requested.

“It’s foolish to try it in this case,” Dershowitz asserted. “Now if you had somebody who was arrested abroad for blowing up an American embassy or something like that you can make that case, but you can’t make it in a situation where the crime is so domestic as this one is.”
One thing is certain, he insisted, whoever represents the suspect will instantly become recognized for the case.

“He’ll probably be one of the most unpopular people in America, particularly if he tries to zealously defend him, and tries to win the case,” according to Dershowitz. “Americans love when lawyers represent unpopular defendants as long as they don’t win.”

Dear Mr. President,

Good morning.  I hope this letter finds you doing well.  I want to start off by saying congratulations on your reelection.  I wanted to take some time to write to you concerning a couple of different topics.

First, I will admit, I am a former Democrat, turned left leaning (Small "L" libertarian) independent voter.  I did support you in the previous election, but I could not in good faith this time.  Instead,  I voted for Gov. Gary Johnson.  I thought long and hard about this choice, but in the end, I did so over civil liberties and foreign policy.  

I ask that you please restore America's faith in your administration by restoring our civil liberties.  A good start would be to ask Congress to repeal the Patriot Act or pass S. 1686, the Justice Act, that was originally introduced in 2011 by former Senator Russ Feingold.  Also, ask them to amend the National Defense Authorization Act, striking out the Indefinite Detention clause.  

I am a former U.S. Marine and Iraq War veteran.  I'm still serving, now, as a medic in the Army Reserve.  I say that because I care deeply about defending our great nation, and I know that it can be done while still upholding our Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Secondly, I ask that you take a different approach concerning Iran.  Simply, I think that your administration should, as President Kennedy did with the Soviet Union during the Cuban Missile Crisis, deal directly with the Iranian government. There is really no need for other countries to act as "middle men."  There seems to be a lot of propaganda in the media, and sadly, it looks like we are headed down the same path that we were leading up to war with Iraq.  

In closing, Mr. President, I want to, again, congratulate you on your reelection victory, and thank you for taking the time to read this.  I ask that you consider my suggestions as your new term begins.  Any response is greatly appreciated.

The Day After - The Fight Continues!

It's cold and raining here in the great state of Tennessee as I have my morning coffee and reflect on yesterday's presidential election.  What I realize is that, while the President won by an impressive amount of electoral votes, the popular vote shows that the race was much, much closer - about 50% to 49%.  The President garnered approximately 59 million votes, while Gov. Romney  approximately 57 million.

And, something I am extremely happy about, well over one million people voted for my candidate, Gov. Gary Johnson.  This is more votes than any other Libertarian candidate in history!  I honestly believe that this number would have been even higher if more people would have voted their conscience.

What all of this really tells me is that the majority of Americans are still unhappy with the direction that this country is going in, and the R3VOLUTION must continue!  We must stay vigilant,  always pushing against the establishment and status quo, in the name of liberty! We must continue to fight for our civil liberties, peace, and fiscal responsibility.  We must Reclaim the Republic and Restore the Constitution for ourselves and future generations!

I ask for your help in this endeavor as we look to 2016.

(August 9, 2012) – Article 1, Section 8 of the United States Constitution grants Congress the sole authority to authorize or declare war. Yet, instead of getting authorization from Congress, Presidents of late have preferred to get “authorization” from the United Nations or other international bodies instead of Congress for the participation of U.S. Armed Forces in hostilities. Most recently, the President authorized U.S. military action in Libya through the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), with the “authorization” from the United Nation’s Security Council. That is not a substitute for a Congressional declaration of war or authorization for the use of military force and it is in clear subversion of the Constitution.  Today, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) announced legislation, H.R. 6290, that would prohibit the deployment of a unit or individual of the U.S. Armed Forces or an element of the intelligence community in support of a NATO mission absent prior statutory authorization for such deployment from Congress, as enshrined in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution. “There is no doubt that another war of choice can happen again at any time. After 10 years and trillions of dollars spent waging wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is clear that we cannot afford to further commit our already overcommitted military. The war in Libya cost the United States $1 billion. “According to NATO’s website, NATO is currently operating in Afghanistan, Kosovo, the Mediterranean Sea, the Horn of Africa and Somalia. Other recent NATO operations have taken place in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Iraq, Greece, Pakistan, Sudan, the Gulf of Aden, and most recently, Libya.  Even 13 years after a U.S.-NATO led intervention, 5,576 NATO troops (PDF) remain in Kosovo. Seven hundred eighty one of them are U.S. troops. “Congress must reestablish itself as a coequal branch of government and ensure that the U.S. is not committed to another NATO mission absent prior Congressional statutory authorization,” said Kucinich. “The Constitution is clear: Article 1, Section 8 provides only Congress with the ability to declare war or authorize the use of military force. Congress cannot stand by idly as the Constitution is circumvented.”

George Washington did not intend on a second term.

He reluctantly ran because the two leading political parties of the time – The Federalists and the Republicans were so at each other’s throats that he feared an election would rip the country apart.

When he finally did resign after his second term, he cautioned the American people not to align behind parties. He believed that over time they gave power to a handful of wealthy individuals who would not truly represent the people as intended, that the parties would skew issues in order to control the people’s perceptions, that parties would be less likely to compromise and more likely to be petty and seek vengeance for defeats with a “party-centric” approach rather than a country centric one, and that in general terms a party system would make us less democratic, infringe on the Constitution, and send us closer to monarchy or dictatorship with an increasingly strong executive branch.

Good to see he was waaaaay off, right?

The bottom line is this: there are more than two ways to think about things. No one on this planet is truly a 100% “Democrat” or “Republican”. We all develop a certain set of beliefs based on where we grew up, how we were raised and the experiences we have in life. It’s that nuance that we should treasure, because the right to have it isn’t available in most nations.

Whether you agree or disagree, I promise that no person signing the dotted line today to put on a uniform is doing it for Mitt Romney or Barack Obama. They’re doing it for themselves, their family, their friends, and their country.

Service to the nation is true patriotism. Putting yourself in harm’s way for the American way of life is an action of absolute substance. And no matter what the talking heads say, service knows no party.

The act of serving is neither Republican nor Democrat.

It is American.
