The Ron Paul Revolution Moves to Congress

Libertarian-leaning Republican Congressman Ron Paul lost his bid for the Republican presidential nomination this year, but a number of his acolytes ran for Congress as Republicans and won November 6. Is Congress the real location of the growing “Ron Paul revolution”?

After a candidate loses an election, it's rare that the candidate's movement continues as a “revolution.” Nobody talks about a John McCain revolution, and even a day after the Mitt Romney defeat for president, nobody's talking about a Mitt Romney movement that will continue after his candidacy. But Representative Ron Paul, a 12-term Texas congressman who is retiring in January, always said his campaign was about ideas instead of personalities. In making endorsements for the U.S. House of Representatives, the former obstetrician played the role of king-maker, winning an astonishing eight of 11 House endorsements:

1. Justin Amash, a Michigan freshman congressman (3rd District), was reelected 58-39 percent over Democratic nominee Steve Pestka, who poured more than $1 million of his own into the campaign. Amash aligned most closely to Rep. Paul's ideas and ideals over the past two years, and the 32-year-old congressman may hold the mantle as the titular head of the Ron Paul movement in Congress. 

2. MIT-trained scientist Thomas Massie easily won Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District race 62-35 percent, and had strong support from Kentucky's Senator Rand Paul after emerging from the GOP primary where he fought off several establishment favorites. Massie won the open seat primary with major support from the Liberty For All SuperPac.

3. Retired high-school teacher and reindeer farmer Kerry Bentivolio won 51-44 percent in Michigan 11th Congressional District race, after some major primary intervention from Ron Paul-backed SuperPacs, including Liberty For All SuperPac. Bentivolio had already won election to finish the term of Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, who resigned earlier this year, so Bentivolio will have an edge over incoming freshman toward placement in committees with his seniority.

4. Former Congressman Steve Stockman will return to Congress from the Texas 36th Congressional District, after easily besting Democratic nominee Max Martin by a 71-26 percent margin. Stockman was a Ron Paul ally during his two years in Congress 1995-1997, and is best known for being a strong advocate of the Second Amendment.

5. Businessman Randy Weber won the race to replace Ron Paul in Texas' 14th Congressional District, defeating Democratic nominee Nick Lampson 53-45 percent.

6. Veterinarian Ted Yoho will represent Florida's 3rd Congressional District after defeating the Democratic nominee Jacques Gaillot in the general election by 65-32 percent. Yoho defeated longtime incumbent Republican Congressman Cliff Stearns in the GOP primary this past summer.

7. Congressman David Schweikert of Arizona's 6th District won reelection 62-33 percent. Schweikert served on the House Money and Banking Subcommittee with Rep. Paul, where he became a key ally in seeking an audit of the Federal Reserve.

8. Congressman Walter Jones easily won reelection to North Carolina's 3rd District, 63-37 percent over his Democratic opponent. Rep. Jones had become a key ally with Paul in opposition to the Iraq War and in favor of defending civil liberties in the so-called “war on terror.”

Some Ron Paul-endorsed candidates did lose their U.S. House elections, however. Longtime incumbent Congressman Roscoe Bartlett of Maryland's 6th District lost 59-38 percent, a victim of redistricting. Freshman Congressman Joe Walsh of Illinois' 8th District lost 55-45 percent to disabled veteran Tammy Duckworth, in a race that garnered some national attention. And scientist Dr. Art Robinson — publisher of the free-market Access to Energy newsletter — lost an expensive race in Oregon's 4th Congressional District, 59-39 percent, to replace longtime incumbent Peter DeFazio in a district that leans Democratic.

Senate Losses

While the news was nearly all good for the “Ron Paul Revolution” in the House, few U.S. Senate candidates favored by Rep. Paul were able to replicate the Kentucky success that Ron Paul's son, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, enjoyed in the Tea Party fervor of 2010. Of the candidates Ron Paul endorsed for the U.S. Senate, only Tea Party favorite Ted Cruz of Texas won his U.S. Senate race, 57-40 percent, over Democratic nominee Paul Sadler.

Minnesota: U.S. Senate candidate Kurt Bills lost 65-35 to incumbent liberal Amy Klobuchar. Representative Connie Mack lost an uphill race against incumbent moderate Democrat Bill Nelson by a 55-42 percent margin. 

Missouri: Representative Todd Akin also lost an insurgent Missouri U.S. Senate race (55-39 percent) against incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill.

Rhode Island: Barry Hinkley lost 61-39 to incumbent Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse.

Delaware: Kevin Wade fell 66-29 to longtime incumbent Thomas Carper.

(In the Montana Senate race against incumbent Jon Tester, Ron Paul-endorsed Denny Rehberg is behind in the vote count, 48-45 percent, even though CNN has yet to call the race.)

The Senate slaughterhouse of Ron Paul endorsed candidates was part of a tough night for the Republican Party Senate candidates overall, which lost several other U.S. Senate seats: Massachusetts U.S. Senator Scott Brown was defeated for reelection by Elizabeth Warren 54-46 percent. Tea Party favorite Richard Mourdock lost the open race to replace Indiana Republican Senator Richard Lugar to Rep. Joe Donnelly, 50-44 percent. And the GOP lost the Maine senate seat being vacated by the retiring Olympia Snowe to independent former Governor Angus King, who is expected to caucus with Senate Democrats.

Many have enjoyed and shared Juan Williams excellent column today at The Hillabout Ron Paul’s influence and legacy. Two highlights from Williams about how Dr. Paul has changed the debate:

But Paul is a persistent politician.

Before the House adjourned for the August recess, Paul won a vote to have an audit of the Federal Reserve.

(T)hat was a revolutionary act against Wall Street, the nation’s banking establishment and the Washington politicians they bankroll.

Every House Republican, except for one, voted for the bill. Eighty-nine Democrats broke with their party’s leadership and voted for it.

Paul has long argued that the Federal Reserve’s role in monetary policy is at the heart of the nation’s economic problems.

He made this a central part of his presidential campaign in 2008, and in 2012. He even authored a book called “End the Fed” in 2009…

Just as he took on the powers at the Federal Reserve, Paul has taken on the powerful and the rich who support unquestioned spending on the military budget.

Cutting the Pentagon’s budget was once dismissed as a lunacy by the political establishment, and especially Republicans. But it has become an increasingly popular position in Congress during Paul’s tenure.

A July survey from the Center for Public Integrity revealed that 80 percent of voters in congressional districts represented by Democrats favor lowering defense spending.

And in a tribute to the power of Ron Paul, 74 percent of voters in districts with Republican representatives now also say they want to lower the defense budget.

Paul’s colleagues in the House are reflecting this new attitude about defense spending. In a surprise move, the GOP-controlled House passed a defense appropriations bill in July that contained an amendment to reduce the military budget by $1.1 billion.

The amendment passed by a substantial majority, 247-167. Eighty-nine Republicans joined 158 Democrats voting in favor of it.

One of the amendment’s authors, Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-S.C.), even credits Paul with helping to shift the debate so that the amendment could be passed.

As he leaves the political scene, there is no doubt that cranky Ron Paul has made his mark on American politics.

We will be living in the age of Ron Paul for many years to come.

Indeed, we will Mr. Williams. How significantly Ron Paul has changed the debate on just issues like the Fed and Pentagon spending is really something to behold. But these two issues are only the beginning.

The rEVOLution Ron Paul started has only begun.

Blue Dogs Endorse No Budget, No Pay Act Coalition Says It’s Time for Congress to Work Together, Do Its Job February 29, 2012 Washington - The fiscally conservative Democratic Blue Dog Coalition in the U.S. House of Representatives has endorsed a bill by Blue Dog Rep. Jim Cooper, D- Tenn., that would require Congress to pass a budget before Members of Congress could get paid.  The No Budget, No Pay Act, H.R. 3643, would require Congress to pass its budget and all appropriations bills by October 1st of every year, the start of the nation’s fiscal year.  If Congress fails to pass both a budget and all of its appropriations bills on time, then Members of Congress will not get paid until they do so.  The law would also prohibit retroactive pay for missed paychecks. The No Budget, No Pay Act would take effect February 1, 2013, thereby only applying to future Congresses and not violating the 27th Amendment.  The bill currently has 30 cosponsors split almost evenly between Democrats and Republicans.  Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., has introduced similar legislation in the Senate, and the Senate Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee has scheduled a hearing on the bill on March 14. Congress has not adopted a budget for more than 1,000 days.  Over the past 36 years, Congress has passed its appropriations bills on time only four times, and it has failed to pass its appropriations bills on time for the 15th straight year. “Americans don’t get paid if they don’t do their jobs, so why should Congress? The Blue Dogs have endorsed my bipartisan bill because it’s a step toward restoring Americans’ faith in our government,” said Cooper, who also serves as Vice Chair of the Blue Dog Task Force on Fiscal Responsibility. “In the last six decades Congress has passed a budget a mere four times," said Rep. Kurt Schrader, D-Ore., Chair of the Blue Dog Task Force on Fiscal Responsibility. “If this body can't find a way to do what we have been sent here to do by the American people, which is to cut spending and reduce our nation's outrageous $15 trillion deficit, then we don't deserve to get paid.” “This bill is about accountability, fiscal responsibility and commonsense.  If Congress can’t work together and do its job, then it shouldn’t get paid,” said Rep. Why Muslims must look in the mirror

If 2010 was the year America finally woke up to political Islam's ne farious reach on US soil, with luck 2011 will be the year we launch an offensive against it. One way to begin that process is through hearings that Rep. Peter King (R-NY), the new chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, plans to hold on American Muslim radicalization.

Attention to this issue offers an opportunity for American Muslims to confront the radicalization problem and provide solutions -- as only they can.

My group, the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, believes these hearings will shed light on the diversity of American Muslims, giving our community a chance to step from behind the veil of Muslim victimization and address head-on the need for long-overdue ideological reforms.

Alas, the announcement of the hearings has triggered heated denunciations by groups like ISNA, CAIR and MPAC, which try to deny and obfuscate the connection between "political Islam," or Islamism, and terror.
This year, the debate on the development of the Ground Zero mosque brought the discussion of political Islam to the front page of every newspaper. While raucous at times, it provided an opportunity for Muslims who don't toe the line of American Islamist organizations to present an alternative vision for American Muslims -- one based in American values and Muslim reform.

Unfortunately, political correctness still too often dominates incidents involving Islamists. This year, the Pentagon released a report on Maj. Nidal Hasan's Fort Hood attack, titled "Protecting the Force: Lessons from Fort Hood." The report was intended to convey to military commanders whatever lessons were learned from the incident, so as to prevent similar attacks in the future. Yet it never mentioned the word Islam or Muslim. Nowhere to be found was any dissection of Hasan's slide into militant Islamism or of his relationship with his homegrown jihadist mentor, Imam Anwar Al-Awlaki.

Meanwhile, President Obama and Mayor Bloomberg used the Ground Zero mosque controversy to tell the more than 70 percent of Americans who oppose the mosque that they were either wrong or confused. Discourse over recent arrests of jihadists in Portland and Baltimore focused on Islamist claims of FBI entrapment, rather than overdue introspection and calls for reform. Worries of Muslim victimization still rule the day.

Our national inability to discuss religious issues honestly is keeping American Muslims from having to accept the reforms needed to defeat political Islam and bring our faith into modernity. The victimization mantra feeds more Muslim isolation and radicalization.

A recent global study by the Pew Research Center showed that Muslims are aligning themselves more and more with Islamism. Of course, most major American Muslim groups, such ISNA, CAIR and MPAC, were built on some strand of that ideology. But knowing where most American Muslims fall in the spectrum of Islamism-vs.-liberalism, as King hopes to find out in his hearings, would be a key step toward counterradicalization.

The fact is, we can't go into 2011 without a discernable strategy on how to defeat Islamist radicalization. House hearings on Muslim radicalization would only be the first step toward finally crafting a US offensive against political Islam.

Again, only liberty-minded Muslims working from within Muslim communities can counter the narrative of Muslim victimization. But America needs to be unashamed of taking the side of those Muslims who advocate reform against political Islam.

In 2011, more Americans need to understand that jihadism is a natural by-product of a political Islam that is incompatible with Western secular democracies based in liberty. America is at war with theocratic Muslim despots who seek the imposition of sharia and don't believe in the equality of all before the law, blind to faith. They detest the association of religious freedom with liberty.

We need a coordinated national strategy of offense that gives Muslim youth an Islamic counternarrative, that defends liberty and that separates mosque and state.

The idea of the Islamic state must be left for history. It is time to help usher in a modern era for Islam and Muslims. Our national security depends on it.

Fact Check: McIntyre Has Consistently Fought to Abolish 'Death Tax'

Ilario Pantano's latest ad is a total distortion of Congressman Mike McIntyre's strong and consistent fight to abolish the Death Tax. Pantano is intentionally misleading the voters of Southeastern North Carolina. He is attempting to silence the voice of our family farms, senior citizens, and small businesses.

Pantano is wrong about the votes he cited. The truth is as follows:

Vote 333, 7/22/1999 -This bill would have endangered the solvency of Social Security and Medicare, which protect our senior citizens. Congressman McIntyre would never compromise the security of our senior citizens.

Vote 252, 6/9/2000 - When it appeared that the Death Tax Elimination Act, which Congressman McIntyre co-sponsored, could be defeated, he immediately voted to increase the estate tax exemption for small businesses and family farms, as well as grant a 20 percent across-the-board reduction in estate and gift taxes for EVERYONE.
(The Death Tax Elimination Act ultimately passed, but it was vetoed. Congressman McIntyre voted to override the veto.)

Vote 959, 10/10/2007 - This was a procedural motion which Congressman McIntyre opposed because it violated the provisions which are necessary to balance the budget. He insists on our federal government balancing its budget.

Vote 929, 12/3/2009 - Congressman McIntyre voted for a motion to fully repeal the estate tax. When that failed, he immediately voted for an exemption to protect our small businesses and family farms.



The organizations that represent small businesses and family farms (NFIB and the Farm Bureau) have examined Congressman McIntyre's record and recognized his longtime advocacy for eliminating the Death Tax and his strong voice for our farm families and small businesses.

Congressman McIntyre's long record of consistently fighting to abolish the Death Tax includes several additional legislative bills, a list of which follows, and which Pantano intentionally omits because he is distorting Congressman McIntyre's record:


1997 - cosponsored H.R.1299, the Family Business Protection Act of 1997, which would amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide relief from estate and gift taxes.

1997 - voted for H.R. 2014, the Taxpayer Relief Act, which increases, incrementally, the unified estate and gift tax credit to $1 million by the year 2006.

1998 - cosponsored H.R. 3879, the Estate and Gift Tax Rate Reduction Act of 1998, which would amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to phaseout the estate and gift taxes over a 10-year period.

1999 - voted for H.R. 3081, the Small Business Tax Fairness Act, which repealed the two highest estate tax brackets and declared that the bill would be the first step toward full repeal of the death tax.

2000 - cosponsored H.R.5315, the Death Tax Relief Now Act of 2000, which would amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to reduce estate and gift tax rates, and for other purposes.

2000 - cosponsored and voted for - and against a veto threat - of H.R.8, the Death Tax Elimination Act of 2000, which would amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to phaseout the estate and gift taxes over a 10-year period.

2001 - cosponsored and voted for H.R. 8, the Death Tax Elimination Act of 2001. Provisions of H.R. 8, the Death Tax Elimination Act, were included in H.R. 1836, the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act, which became Public Law 107-16 on 6/7/2001.

2002 - voted for H.R. 2143. the Permanent Death Tax Repeal Act. The Senate did not consider.

2003 - voted for HR 8, the Death Tax Repeal Permanency Act

2005 - cosponsored and voted for H.R.8, the Death Tax Repeal Permanency Act of 2005. The Senate did not consider.

2006 - voted for HR 5638, the Permanent Estate Tax Relief Act

2007 - cosponsored H.R.2380, the Death Tax Repeal Permanency Act of 2007.

The Truth About Mike's Voting Record

The ads issued on behalf of the Pantano campaign by the National Republican Congressional Committee are false and misleading, based on incorrect information and skewed statistics.

Similar ads across the country are being pulled down after being scrutinized by local TV stations for using deceptive and misleading statistics.

Congressman McIntyre has not voted with Speaker Nancy Pelosi 90 percent of the time. As verified by NationalJournal.com, an independent analysis of congressional votes, Congressman McIntyre votes right down the middle--as he always has done, based upon the legislation's impact upon Southeastern North Carolina.

The false 90 percent figure is an inaccurate calculation which counts procedural votes to "stack the deck" of percentages.

On the actual issues being considered for a straight "up" or "down" vote, Congressman McIntyre's votes reflect his willingness to work with folks based on the issues themselves--not partisanship.

The math is further miscalculated because Congressman McIntyre voted over 1500 times, while the Speaker only voted less than 90 times.

As reported by The Hill, a similar ad was taken down by a local ABC affiliate in Lynchburg, V.A., in U.S. Rep. Rick Boucher's race because of similar false and misleading advertising.

The Public Servant Vs. The Politician

Congressman Mike McIntyre is a public servant that does just that - He serves his public. Ilario Pantano, on the other hand, is a politician who serves himself and Washington special interests. Representative McIntyre's long record of bipartisanship speaks for itself. Time after time, he has crossed party lines in order to do what is right for his constituency, the state of North Carolina and our nation. Because of facts like these, Mike McIntyre is the right choice on November 2nd, regardless of your party affiliation. You might ask why I believe this - it's simple, I'm not a liberal. I am a libertarian minded voter that votes all across the board and doesn't care about party affiliation. Like so many voters, I care about the issues. I support small government, free markets, Constitutional Rights and low taxes. Therefore, supporting this Democrat is the right choice.

Congressman McIntyre has consistently received an "A" rating and an endorsement from the National Rifle Association. He knows the importance of our Constitutional Rights. He also knows that free markets and small business is vital in creating jobs and restoring our economy. Regardless of what his opponent might say, it is a fact that he has constantly taken steps to lower and eliminate taxes and cut unnecessary government spending. This is evident by his voting against the Health Care Reform Act. While he realizes the great need for true, effective health care reform, he realized the enormous strain the increased taxes and spending would have on our economy, especially on all of the small business owners who are trying to create jobs. He has stated that he supports and, if reelected, will work to repeal the Health Care Mandate. Rep. McIntyre's fiscal responsibility is further demonstrated by his vote against the Cap and Trade Tax and his efforts to restrict and abolish the "Death Tax."

Another benefit of returning Congressman McIntyre to Washington is his belief in a smaller and more transparent Federal Government. This belief was demonstrated when he supported Congressman Ron Paul's "Audit The Fed" legislation. This bill would have given the American public and their representatives more "eyes on" and oversight of the Federal Reserve. Like you and I, Mike McIntyre knows the importance of being able to see where our money goes. While these facts alone are ample for someone deciding to vote for Mike McIntyre, none of them are my number one reason.

The number one reason why I am voting for the Congressman is because I am a veteran, and Mike McIntyre is a leader who cares about our nation's military, its veterans and their families. He consistently voted to raise military pay and improve veterans’ benefits such as veteran health care and the improved G.I. Bill. While he has had concerns about the current military operations in the Middle East, he has never voted to cut necessary and much needed funds from the defense budget. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, in addition to operational contingency funding and pay raises, Congressman McIntyre helped pass a budget that included a large housing allowance increase and $1.4 billion for North Carolina military construction. It has to say something about the Congressman's dedication to our service members and veterans when the VFW's political action committee, as well as the popular, highly decorated and highly respected, Former Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Charles Krulak, chose to endorse him over Pantano, an actual veteran.

Ilario Pantano tries extremely hard to present himself as a combat veteran and honest friend of the people. Like him, I was taught the importance of the Marine Corps values - Honor, Courage, and Commitment. However, Mr. Pantano must not have listened as closely at Quantico as I did at Parris Island because, instead of showing the voters of the 7th District how he would serve and assist them, he has done nothing but bend the truth and distort the facts about Congressman McIntyre's voting record. Not to mention that he's done this without offering any real solutions. Mr. Pantano, where's your Honor and Commitment? Also, while I haven't always agreed with Congressman McIntyre, he's always been honest and open about his views and record. This is very admirable, and I respect him for it. Ilario Pantano, on the other hand, has yet to be open and honest about his military and combat record. As a four-tour Iraq War veteran, I ask, Where's your Courage Mr. Pantano?

The choice is simple; Mike McIntyre is a true public servant that works for us, while Ilario Pantano is a politician who does nothing more than gives lip service to Honor, Courage, and Commitment, as well as to his would be constituency.

Veterans of Foreign Wars PAC Endorses Congressman McIntyre

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Political Action Committee Board of Directors has endorsed Congressman Mike McIntyre for re-election.

The VFW-PAC endorsed Congressman McIntyre because of specific legislation that he strongly supported regarding veterans rights and benefits, as well as his unyielding stance on national security issues.

As a senior member of the House Committee on Armed Services, Congressman McIntyre is a leading champion for our military veterans and retirees. He has fought for strengthened health benefits for our veterans and retirees, and the right of veterans to receive retirement pay along with disability pay. Additionally, Congressman McIntyre successfully fought for additional veterans clinics throughout the district.

Additionally, Congressman McIntyre authored the Veterans Outreach Improvement Act, which passed unanimously in the U.S. House during the 110th and 111th Sessions of Congress. The bill would allow the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to partner with state and local governments, through grant opportunities, and to reach out to veterans and their families in ensuring they receive the benefits for which they are eligible and assist them in completing their benefits claims.

Congressman McIntyre was named “National Legislator of the Year” for veterans in 2008 by the National Association of County Veterans’ Service Officers.

McIntyre Responds to Pantano’s Fabricated ‘Death Tax’ Ad

Congressman Mike McIntyre responded to Pantano’s fabricated ‘Death Tax’ ad by stating:

“We need to do all we can to protect small businesses and family farms, and I am 100% committed to ending the “death” tax! Since my election to Congress, I have consistently supported this repeal. What my opponent does not tell you is that I voted for a motion to eliminate the estate tax during consideration of the estate tax relief bill in 2009. Unfortunately, this motion was defeated. I voted to extend the exemption for the 2009 estate tax for the time being because at that time, the estate tax was to be repealed for one year only. When it became apparent that the repeal of the estate tax was not going to be successful, it was important to maintain the highest exemption possible.”

Led by U.S. Representative Steve Austria (R-OH), the House Republican Freshman Class of the 111th Congress unanimously voted Congressman Ron Paul’s (R-Lake Jackson) legislation, H.R. 1207, the Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2009, as the “best legislation filed” during the 111th Congress.

Austria presented Paul with a certificate of appreciation from freshman Members of Congress for his efforts to bring about greater accountability and transparency in public institutions, as well as to thank him for his “many years of service and dedication to the cause of liberty and the promotion of free market principles.”

“As new members, we understand that the American people are not happy with the ‘closed door, backroom deal-making’ approach to government that has come to characterize Washington in recent years,” the freshmen Republicans said in a letter to Paul. “Passage of your legislation would begin to move our government back into the sunlight where it belongs.”

Rep. Bill Posey (R-FL) made the motion to nominate Paul’s legislation. He said Paul has long been committed to furthering transparency in government.

“Transparency is an important building block of our public institutions,” Posey said. “Rep. Paul’s legislation, combined with his efforts over his many years of service, has made a positive contribution toward maintaining the freedoms which the Founders of our nation intended us all to have.”

Also called the “Audit the Fed” bill, Paul’s legislation failed by a vote of 229-198 despite being co-sponsored by 320 Members of Congress. All House Republicans and 23 Democrats voted in favor of the bill.

The bill was supported by other area congressmen, including Michael McCaul (R-Austin), Pete Olson (R-Sugar Land) and John Culberson (R-Houston).

Paul’s 14th Congressional District includes portions of western Fort Bend County and much of Cinco Ranch.
