Our America Initiative

THE OUR AMERICA INITIATIVE’S PURPOSE IS SIMPLE, YET VITAL: TO REDEFINE THE LIBERTY MOVEMENT IN AMERICA. WE AIM TO RESTORE LIBERTY, PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY AND ECONOMIC FREEDOM AS THE TRUE AMERICAN VALUES, TO COEXIST AS INDIVIDUALS WHO RESPECT THE RIGHTS AND SANCTITY OF ALL PERSONS, TO FOSTER AN ENVIRONMENT THAT ALLOWS EACH PERSON TO PURSUE HIS OR HER INDIVIDUAL DREAMS AND HAPPINESS WITHOUT THE BURDENS OF UNNEEDED GOVERNMENT RESTRICTIONS.

Our America’s new video

Just weeks before the 2012 election, the nonpartisan Pew Research Center released a poll showing that only 54% of American voters were satisfied with their “choices” for President.  A full 40% said they were NOT satisfied.

Is it possible that a significant reason for this dissatisfaction was, simply, that a great many Americans didn’t realize who their choices were?  And is that any surprise, given that the Republican and Democrat parties have gone to extraordinary lengths to convince American voters that their candidates are the only real options, despite the fact that more people consider themselves to be independents than Republicans and Democrats combined?

Letting America know that there are more choices begins with the presidential debates.  You can help here: Our America’s Debate Challenge

The most powerful weapon the two “major” parties use to exclude other candidates from serious consideration is their Commission on Presidential Debates.  Yes, that “Commission”, regardless of its official-sounding name, is theirs.  It was created in 1987 by the Republican and Democrat national parties, and is a private organization funded by special interests and run by a board of — you guessed it — Republicans and Democrats.  There is nothing nonpartisan about it, and they have made no secret of their desire to keep anyone other than their own two nominees OFF the debate stage.
As part of our mission to make truly small government and greater individual Liberty part of the nation’s dialogue, the Our America Initiative is mounting an aggressive campaign to break up the Republican-Democrat control of the nationally-televised presidential debates.  Allowing other qualified and credible candidates on the debate stage will dramatically alter the political and policy landscape — and we are committed to making that happen.

Our America has just released an Internet video as part of this campaign. Check it out here: Change the Presidential Debates, and share with your friends.

Our effort is two-fold. First, we are challenging the Commission on Presidential Debates in court, and second, we plan to inform and mobilize people from all over the country to let debate sponsors, the news media and others know that allowing the two “major” parties to control the all-important debates is simply not fair — and not acceptable.

To kick this campaign off, the Our America Initiative must raise $50,000 — soon. Please go to Our America’s Debate Challenge today and help us reach that goal. This is a fight we can win, but only with your help.

P.S.  Don’t forget to share our debate challenge video with your friends, and go to Our America’s Debate Challenge today to help.

Gov. Gary Johnson: Government shuts down, and we're still here.

Government shuts down, and we're still here

Friends,

I was a Governor for eight years. I know a little bit about running a government, being the “Chief Executive” of bureaucracy.

And I can tell you this. If my government lawyers came to me and said, even though 83% of the government can remain open under a so-called “shutdown”, that I didn’t have the authority to pay the death benefits to families of fallen American service members, I WOULD FIND SOME NEW LAWYERS.

Make no mistake, this “shutdown” (which is really only a modest slow-down) is an embarrassing display of the collective incompetence of our government.  It won’t even save any money. Instead, if we ever get an honest accounting, I promise you that we will find that it has, in reality, cost us taxpayers a bundle.  It obviously costs more to close an open-air monument than to leave it open.  It costs more to shut down a website for a few days than to simply leave it alone.  And then there are the government employees, through no fault of their own, who will end up being paid for not working.  And now we have States loaning the Feds money to keep national parks open -- with no real promise of being repaid.

At the same time, this slow-down has shown Americans some things that are worth noting. First, while some damage has been done to undeserving people by this exercise in mismanagement, the reality is that, 11 days into the shutdown, we’re still here.  The world has not come to an end.  We’re getting a glimpse of the big-government advocates’ worst nightmare: Americans seeing that much of what government does really isn’t necessary.

It’s interesting that some have suggested “reopening” the government in pieces, consciously deciding which programs to restore.  While doing so in response to political pressure is not the best way to govern, it is amusing that this approach has been widely rejected by the politicians. It’s amusing because THAT’S WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO DO IN THE FIRST PLACE. That’s why there is an appropriations process, and why there is supposed to actually be a budget.  But to the politicians in Washington, who haven’t actually adopted a budget in years, going through a process to actually debate and decide what to spend money on has become a radical idea.

In short, as ridiculous as it is, this “slow-down” is an opportunity, and the Our America Initiative and I are seizing it.  Beginning tomorrow, I will be talking about the utter dysfunction of the government on the national news.  Later this month, I will be traveling to Washington, DC, to carry our message directly to the politicians who are the problem.

But we need more than just my voice.  We need yours.  Your contribution at OurAmericaInitiative.com makes it possible for us to spread our message of fiscal sanity, small government and liberty across the Internet, to the media, and most important, to the millions of Americans who share our views.

This “shutdown” gives us a chance to put liberty and freedom from a government that is out of control in front of the American people -- as a real alternative to the status quo.  Help us seize that opportunity!  Go to OurAmericaInitiative.com today and help.

Thank you.

Friends,

Hopefully, you have something enjoyable planned for Independence Day.  A parade to go to, a picnic or BBQ, some time with family and friends...or just a day to relax. The "4th" is a great summer holiday filled with tradition, as it should be.

But if you’re like me, this Independence Day feels a little different.

The news in recent weeks about the IRS using its force against certain targeted groups has reminded us that, absent vigilance on our parts, the government will abuse the power it has accumulated.  Likewise, as we learn more about the massive surveillance being conducted by the NSA and the FBI, a lot of Americans are today thinking and talking about the 4th Amendment and its intended protections against unreasonable searches.

In short, I believe these “revelations” are bringing long-overdue attention to the liberties the Founding Fathers worked so hard and sacrificed so much to provide and protect.  It is more than a little ironic that the Revolution was prompted, in part, by abusive tax policies and unreasonable searches -- on the part of “tyrants”. And it is worth reminding ourselves that America fought wars to preserve the same freedoms that our own government today seems intent on eroding.

Regardless of our plans for this Independence Day, I hope they include remembering that the battle for freedom NEVER ends, and dedicating ourselves to restoring the liberty on which our great nation was founded.  That is the most patriotic thing we can do tomorrow -- and in all the days that follow.

Best Wishes for a great Independence Day, and thank you for all you do to ensure that freedom, liberty and opportunity are the real American values!

Thanks,

Gov. Gary Johnson
Honorary Chairman

Gov. Gary Johnson on the IRS, Goverment Spying on Jornalists, and the Patriot Act.

Friends,

If not for the fact that there are very serious abuses of power involved, the congressional outrage we are seeing about the Obama Administration’s IRS targeting of certain groups for scrutiny and harassment would almost be comical.  The same goes for the congressional indignation we are seeing over the Department of Justice’s secret spying on members of the news media.

Don’t get me wrong.  Asking non-profit organizations what they pray for and secretly obtaining and reading journalists’ personal emails are, by any reasonable measure, truly disturbing acts.  But watching, day after day, as congressional committees drag bureaucrats into hearings and Senators and Representatives take to the airwaves to express their shock over such abuses, someone needs to ask the obvious question:  Why is it even remotely surprising, much less shocking, that, when given power, the government will use it to the greatest extent possible?

That’s what government does.

Everyday, hard-working Americans are harassed by the IRS.  That is not new.  People in Congress can express outrage when that harassment ends up on the front page or happens to organizations they care about, but who is holding Congress itself accountable for a tax code they have concocted over the decades that is designed to punish some and reward others?? The legal weapons the IRS is leveling at specific groups were handed to the IRS by Congress.

And the “spying” on journalists?  Well, Congress, YOU enacted and renewed the Patriot Act and other laws that say it’s OK for the government to read private citizens’ emails, secretly obtain phone records and track our movements.  And now you are shocked that the Obama Administration would use that authority against Fox News?

How about admitting that the Patriot Act is a mistake, and repealing it?  That would be a lot more helpful than pretending as though you can’t understand why government abuses the power you gave it.

And if you truly don’t want the IRS to single out certain groups for special “treatment” -- good or bad, then remove the thousands of loopholes, subsidies and other manipulative provisions in the tax code that make the IRS so powerful in the first place.

With the abuses of government power that are coming to light in recent days -- abuses that ordinary Americans deal with all the time, we must not let Congress off the hook.  With the encouragement of Republican and Democrat administrations alike, the politicians on Capitol Hill created the opportunities for those abuses.  We can complain about government exercising the force of agencies like the IRS and the FBI, but it is foolish to believe that, when given power, government won’t use it -- or abuse it.  The real answer is to reduce the size and power of that government.

The Our America Initiative is committed to doing just that: Reducing government’s size, cost, and power over our daily lives.  Your support is the key.  Please go to Our America Initiative today and contribute what you can so that we can hold the politicians accountable for the abuses they have created.

Thanks, as always, for your friendship and support of liberty!
