Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good morning. I hope this e-mail finds you all doing well. I wanted to take the time to write concerning Vice Chairman Arvin Vohra's recent comments concerning the military. A little about myself, I am a thirty-five year old husband and father. I am a former U.S. Marine and four-tour Iraq War veteran. Currently, I work as a patrol division deputy sheriff. After being raised as a fiscally conservative, blue dog Democrat, I discovered libertarianism and the Libertarian Party in 2008 thanks to Ron Paul's presidential campaign. While living in North Carolina, I served on their state LP executive committee. I served as a libertarian minded Republican county commissioner in Bledsoe County, TN. Currently, I am the Bledsoe County, TN LP county chairman, and I am contemplating running for Bledsoe County Sheriff, as a libertarian, in 2018. With all of that being said, being a member of the Libertarian Party lately has been somewhat awkward and disheartening. I'm a Christian, a combat veteran, and a cop. I am proudly all of those things, but I am also proudly for the legalization of Marijuana, pro-LGBT, and I love guns. I think Gary Johnson and Bill Weld were great candidate's, even though "pure" libertarians did not. I am a supporter and fan of Mr. Wayne Allyn Root, and I think that he was forced out of the party, even though his relentlessness and mindset could have helped us win elections. I found Mr. Vohra's comments uneducated and repugnant. Since I read the news story, I've struggled with my political identity and wondered if I'm, once again, politically homeless. I have teetered on the edge of resigning from the party, but after a lot of soul searching and an outstanding run this morning, I have concluded that, if I and others like me, leave the LP, Mr. Vohra wins. Bluntly, if people like me were actually mindless murderers, Mr. Vohra would probably no longer be breathing after his comments. The fact that he's still above ground, shows that the issue is a little more complicated than that. I will continue my membership in the Libertarian Party in order to serve as a voice for a small, but growing section of the party, and I'll say this, if the Libertarian Party really wants to grow and win elections, we need to embrace the big tent theory, and we need to come to the table with those with the background like mine.

Very respectfully,

At the beginning of this election season, I started out supporting former Senator and U.S. Marine, (all around badass), Jim Web (D-VA) for President. When he dropped out, I supported Rand Paul (R-KY). After Senator Paul dropped out, I supported, and voted for in the Tennessee GOP Primary, Gov. John Kasich (R-OH). In the general election, I was one of the more than 4 million Americans who voted for Gov. Gary Johnson (L-NM).

With all of that being said, my wife and I just returned from attending Donald Trump's inauguration. He's MY President. He's OUR President.

I will support him when I agree with him. I will respectfully oppose him when I don't, while offering alternatives (as opposed to yelling political sound bites loudly or damaging people's property), and like a good Episcopalian, I will pray for him...seriously, it's part of every Sunday Rite, regardless of who is in office.

Hello All --

As I'm sure you know, Jim Webb recently decided to end his quest for the Democratic presidential nomination -- but he's considering continuing his run as an independent. As of right now, we don't know whether he will seek the nomination of another party or simply run as an independent and ask for endorsements.

Either way, we'd like to hear from you. We've set up a survey on our website to poll our membership, and we'd appreciate it if you would take a moment out to answer a single question.

If you believe we should support Jim Webb for the presidency, either as our nominee or through our endorsement, please answer "yes." If not, please answer "no."

You can access the survey by clicking on this link: http://www.modernwhig.org/nominate_or_endorse_jim_web_for_president_survey

As always, thank you for your support -- and I look forward to working with you as we continue to answer the call to service the Modern Whig Party was founded on.

Michael Burger
National Chair
Modern Whig Partyhttp://www.modernwhig.org/ -ADYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01317585283989610793noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7581874138454698675.post-5580983426006198932015-10-25T21:09:00.000-04:002015-10-25T21:09:28.938-04:00Rand Paul Wins RLC Straw PollFYI - From Dave Nalle and the RLC.
NASHUA, NH - Rand Paul was the most preferred presidential candidate of the Republican contenders as voted by nearly 800 activists attending the Republican Liberty Caucus National Convention, held in New Hampshire, home of the first in the nation presidential primary.

The straw poll was conducted using an alternative voting method called “approval voting,” which allows voters to approve of one or more of the current Republican presidential candidates. This method of voting allows voters to indicate the candidate or candidates that they would support if the election were held today. As a preference poll this may produce results where more than one candidate receives over 50% approval.

Rand Paul was the preference of 57.1% of the convention’s attendees. Ted Cruz came in second with a 51.2% preferred rating. No other candidate received more than 17.9%.

While this does not represent the RLC’s final endorsement, it does indicate a strong preference of the attendees for these candidates. The RLC’s official endorsement process requires two-thirds of its state chapters to approve a candidate. The RLC officially endorsed Ron Paul for President in 2012.

“The large turnout for this event and the enthusiastic participation of attendees in this poll shows the rising tide of Liberty in the Republican Party,” said Matt Nye, National Chairman of the Republican Liberty Caucus. “Liberty Republicans have clearly identified these two candidates as the best in a crowded field. They are an inspiration to Republicans around the country and we look forward to a great crop of candidates at every level, ready to go to Washington and restore limited government and a respect for individual liberty.”

National frontrunner Donald Trump received 6.9% approval in the poll. Ben Carson received 17.9% and Carly Fiorina received 10.1%.

“New Hampshire is the jumping off point for the nomination campaign and with this choice the people have clearly chosen liberty,” said Aaron Day, Chairman of the Republican Liberty Caucus of New Hampshire. “We look forward to seeing a lot more of both Rand Paul and Ted Cruz in the next few months and I’m confident that our state candidates will do well with one of them at the top of the ticket.”

The full results of the poll are:

Candidate Votes Percent

Rand Paul 445 57.1%
Ted Cruz 399 51.2%
Ben Carson 139 17.9%
Carly Fiorina 79 10.1%
Marco Rubio 75 9.6%
Donald Trump 54 6.9%
Bobby Jindal 51 6.6%
Rick Santorum 27 3.5%
Mike Huckabee 25 3.2%
John Kasich 17 2.2%
Chris Christie 14 1.8%
Gil Fulbright 12 1.5%
Jeb Bush 9 1.2%
George Pataki 6 0.8%
Lindsey Graham 4 0.5%
Vermin Supreme 3 0.4%
Jim Gilmore 3 0.4%
Mark Everson 2 0.3%

Andrew Jennings of the Center for Election Science, a non-profit group which conducted the poll, observed that “Approval voting is a better way to run elections because it doesn’t force voters to abandon their ideal candidate to vote for a compromise—they can vote for both. In a general election it would prevent spoilers and let all candidates see their true level of support. In crowded elections like the current Republican primary, it would stop the vote splitting which is distorting the race and would allow us to see how the voters really feel about each candidate.”

Unlike a “first past the post” traditional straw poll where participants vote for only ONE candidate, using an alternative “approval voting” system we allowed activists to more clearly express the preference and favorites for the Republican nomination.

Both the Paul and Cruz camps actively encouraged local supporters to participate in the straw poll. This gave them an opportunity to both test and show their organizational strength and level of committed activist willing to come out and vote.

The National Board of the Republican Liberty Caucus (RLC) has voted to name Wayne Allyn Root as Chairman of its National Campaign Committee, as well as Chairman of the RLC Advisory Board. Root, now back to his lifelong Republican roots, was the Libertarian Vice Presidential nominee in 2008, as well as an elected Board member of the Libertarian National Committee, and Chairman of the Libertarian National Campaign Committee.

One of America’s most vocal critics of the Obama administration, Root is a frequent radio and TV guest, political commentator, syndicated political columnist, and the author of the national bestselling books, “The Ultimate Obama Survival Guide” and “The Murder of the Middle Class.”

"We are very excited to have Wayne on board," said Matt Nye, RLC National Chairman. "Wayne is an extremely talented, charismatic and dynamic media personality; he's an outspoken advocate for liberty, but he is particularly fierce on economic freedom and the U.S. Constitution."

At the time Root joined the Libertarian Presidential ticket in 2008, the Bob Barr-Wayne Root presidential ticket was the 2nd most successful vote-getter in the party's history. Root says that experience showed him just how heavily the scales are tilted in favor of the two-party system.

"As the Libertarian Party’s vice presidential nominee, I called myself a 'REAGAN libertarian,' in honor of my heroes Ronald Reagan and his mentor Barry Goldwater," Root said. "I will forever be a libertarian leaning Republican-conservative, and I am grateful for my start in national politics with the Libertarian Party."

Root says the grassroots uprising in 2010 and 2014 has given him hope the Republican Party can be returned to its roots.

"Given the popularity of the Tea Party message it makes sense to work within the Republican Party to return the GOP to the ideology of Ronald Reagan, Barry Goldwater and Jack Kemp," Root said. "That is exactly the mission of the Republican Liberty Caucus, and I’m here to inject a dose of world-class energy and enthusiasm!"

RLC Chairman Matt Nye agrees, but says the Republicans apparently didn’t get the memo. He hopes high profile individuals like Root joining with grassroots organizations like the RLC will help them see the light.

"In spite of the clear message the grassroots sent with massive, record-setting landslides in both the 2010 and 2014 elections, GOP party leadership doesn't appear to have gotten the message," Nye said. "Republicans were given a clear mandate to stop Obama's agenda, but they've done nothing of substance to do so."

Root agrees. "We're stuck with leadership in both houses that is either spineless, incompetent or sympathetic to the president's big government agenda; that, or the GOP’s leaders have simply been bought off by lawyers, lobbyists, big corporate donations and the famous DC culture of corruption," Root said. "This is simply unacceptable. We are watching the greatest country, and the greatest middle class, in world history being systematically destroyed, and that is something I cannot stand by idly and watch."

In his best-selling books Root blames the partnership of big government, big media and big corporations.

"Republicans must stand firm, cut spending and debt, balance the budget, repeal Obamacare, audit and reform the Fed, re-establish the Gold Standard and roll back out-of control federal agencies like the EPA, IRS, and the NSA program spying on US citizens," Root said. "Most of all, Republican leaders must stand up and fight for capitalism and American Exceptionalism.”

Root says Republicans must offer a clear alternative.

"The GOP controls Congress, and Congress controls spending," Root said. "It's time the GOP withdraws from this president's agenda that is destroying capitalism, small business and America. If they can’t do that, then Americans have no reason to vote Republican."

Nye concurs.

"With Wayne's help, we at the RLC intend to hold their feet to the fire,” he said.

Root’s web site is www.ROOTforAmerica.com. His new business book, entitled “The Power of RELENTLESS!” will be out August 10th. You can follow Wayne on Twitter here.

I will say, with approximately 1,200 registered voters in our district, I thought turnout would be higher due to the County Mayor and Sheriff's race, but I couldn't be happier! I promise to work hard everyday to help our district, our county, and our state with integrity and transparency.

To those of you who went door to door and made phone calls - I will be forever grateful! I won't let you down!

Just weeks before the 2012 election, the nonpartisan Pew Research Center released a poll showing that only 54% of American voters were satisfied with their “choices” for President. A full 40% said they were NOT satisfied.

Is it possible that a significant reason for this dissatisfaction was, simply, that a great many Americans didn’t realize who their choices were? And is that any surprise, given that the Republican and Democrat parties have gone to extraordinary lengths to convince American voters that their candidates are the only real options, despite the fact that more people consider themselves to be independents than Republicans and Democrats combined?

Letting America know that there are more choices begins with the presidential debates. You can help here: Our America’s Debate Challenge

The most powerful weapon the two “major” parties use to exclude other candidates from serious consideration is their Commission on Presidential Debates. Yes, that “Commission”, regardless of its official-sounding name, is theirs. It was created in 1987 by the Republican and Democrat national parties, and is a private organization funded by special interests and run by a board of — you guessed it — Republicans and Democrats. There is nothing nonpartisan about it, and they have made no secret of their desire to keep anyone other than their own two nominees OFF the debate stage.
As part of our mission to make truly small government and greater individual Liberty part of the nation’s dialogue, the Our America Initiative is mounting an aggressive campaign to break up the Republican-Democrat control of the nationally-televised presidential debates. Allowing other qualified and credible candidates on the debate stage will dramatically alter the political and policy landscape — and we are committed to making that happen.

Our America has just released an Internet video as part of this campaign. Check it out here: Change the Presidential Debates, and share with your friends.

Our effort is two-fold. First, we are challenging the Commission on Presidential Debates in court, and second, we plan to inform and mobilize people from all over the country to let debate sponsors, the news media and others know that allowing the two “major” parties to control the all-important debates is simply not fair — and not acceptable.

To kick this campaign off, the Our America Initiative must raise $50,000 — soon. Please go to Our America’s Debate Challenge today and help us reach that goal. This is a fight we can win, but only with your help.

P.S. Don’t forget to share our debate challenge video with your friends, and go to Our America’s Debate Challenge today to help.

Some good food for thought for the GOP. The Republican Party will not be successful on the national level again unless they become more socially tolerant. They must embrace their libertarian wing.
This booklet brings together three essays from the left-libertarian tradition on emerging ecological orders and environmental protection in a freed-market society. The first, “A Libertarian Technology of Ecology” was originally published in the Summer 1969 issue of The Innovator: Applications, Experiments, and Developments in Liberty, a radical libertarian newsletter that ran from 1964-1969. The article was signed by “Ho Chi Zen,” a pen name commonly used by Kerry Thornley (1938-1998), a market anarchist author, counterculture publisher, and Nonprophet of Discordianism. The second, “Environmental Destruction” is excerpted and abridged from “Destroying the Environment,” Chapter 8 of Mary Ruwart’s book, Healing Our World in an Age of Aggression (1993). The third, “Deeper Ecology and Deeper Markets” was originally published as “Closing the Green Gap of Market Liberalism,” in The Freeman: Ideas on Liberty (December 1994), by Karl Hess, Jr. (Karl Hess IV), a left-market anarchist, a noted libertarian ecologist and champion of appropriate technology (and son of the ground-breaking left-libertarian radical and political theorist Karl Hess, Sr.).

“Conservation is often considered a statist bugaboo but, in fact, the problem of ecological upset is a real one — made all the more pressing by the fact that statist solutions of increased legal restriction do not work. Those who do the most polluting and destroying also have the most political influence in a society where government and business are interdependent partners. What is needed, instead of more laws cranked out by conditioned reflex, is the same kind of rational, scientific and cybernetic epistemology that is now used in DISCOVERING ecological problems, but not in solving them! Doubtlessly, such spiraling cycles of thought, experimentation, and data collection on the subject would transcend the legalistic, regulatory solutions in short order. . . .” —Kerry Thornley

“While the market of global process and exchange is essential to the wellbeing of society, it is not sufficient for most people’s happiness. The market that matters most to people lies closest to home, the marketplace where people gather to exchange in voluntary fashion everything from cash to good ideas to friendship to mutual aid and cooperation. It is the deep market of community, the cooperative flip side to the market of competition and impersonal economic forces. Therein lies the challenge to both greens and market liberals—how to save the marketplace from both the state and the impersonal market. Free marketeers must look beyond market gimmicks to solve festering environmental problems in a manner still consistent with liberty. The new environmental commons of ecological processes and unbounded communities of plants and animals demand solutions that encompass and yet go beyond ordinary markets and property rights. The environmental commons is a challenge to community—or, in the absence of community, a challenge that will be eagerly taken up by a centralized state in search of an equivalent to militarism. . . .” —Karl Hess, Jr.

Although the particular proposal in Switzerland may not be ideal, that does not mean, Matthew Feeney argues, that libertarians should shy away from proposing something similar. Being morally comfortable with some degree of government wealth redistribution might be contrary to anarchism, but it is not contrary to libertarianism. Were libertarians to argue for replacing the current welfare system with a basic national income we would be better positioned to highlight that libertarianism is not the heartless and selfish philosophy it is commonly portrayed as, and it would allow for a more humane and effective way to deliver welfare than the current system on offer.

RICHMOND — The Republican and the Democrat were there again, along with their well-worn lines. But for once, they shared the stage with the Libertarian, whose very presence Saturday made the race for Virginia governor feel fresh with little more than a week to go before Election Day.

Anyone weary of the campaign same-old, same-old — Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II (R) saying, “I’m the only candidate in the race who won’t need on-the-job training,” or Democrat Terry McAuliffe declaring, “We’ve got sequestration here for the year” — could enjoy these new nuggets Saturday from little-known candidate Robert Sarvis: Quoting Alexander Solzhenitsyn. Advocating an end to the war on drugs. Discussing abortion as a “metaphysical” disagreement. And saying flatly that contracting policies that favor minority-owned businesses violate “the rule of law.”

It was a revelation to even the most dedicated politics-watchers because Sarvis, who has been polling around 10 percent, has been shut out of every debate. He has participated in some forums with McAuliffe and Cuccinelli, but they were small ones that brought out the candidates sequentially, not together. On Saturday, Sarvis was allowed to take the stage with his major-party competition at a forum sponsored by Radio One and 8News, Richmond’s ABC television affiliate.

“He seems genuine, and I like that he doesn’t appear to be backed by big money,” said Felicia Kalber, 43, who came to the event inclined to vote for Sarvis and left convinced that she would. Kalber, who does accounting work, picked up a Sarvis pin and put it on before leaving.

The Richmond forum, which drew more than 100 people to the Virginia War Memorial, was not a formal debate. The candidates sat side by side and took turns answering questions posed by a moderator. There was no back and forth.

McAuliffe and Cuccinelli stuck to their usual themes, with McAuliffe stressing the benefits of expanding Medicaid and Cuccinelli touting his plan to create jobs by cutting business and personal income taxes by $1.4 billion a year.

McAuliffe seemed eager to double down on a statement he made at the Virginia Tech debate, volunteering that he had been given an “F” rating by the National Rifle Association. He brought up the “F” on his own and declared, “I’m not running to be president of the NRA.”

Cuccinelli, who has spent most of the campaign questioning McAuliffe’s ethics, seemed especially focused on the idea that McAuliffe was offering “platitudes” rather than concrete plans.

It was Sarvis who grabbed the most attention, if only because he had so rarely been in the limelight. He said that both major parties had failed the country and that it was time for something new: someone who supports both smaller government, as Cuccinelli does, and socially liberal policies, as McAuliffe does — the only candidate, as Sarvis put it, who is “both open-minded and open for business.”
“A third-party governor is exactly what we need,” he said. “We need . . . to take the good from both and leave the bad behind.”

Apryl Ziegler, 38, works as a paralegal in the attorney general’s office and supports Cuccinelli. But she was intrigued to hear Sarvis take a question about gun control and turn it into an argument for ending the war on drugs.

“That was an interesting take,” she said.

She thought Sarvis seemed a little nervous, but she chalked that up to inexperience.

“He’s kind of new to this,” she said.
